The Passion Project

Where to start with this one…I’ve always found it incredibly important to have a passion project outside of my traditional job, a creative outlet if you will. While on paper, some may think that it could speed up burnout or interfere one way or another — I’ve found the opposite to be true.

I started the brand Tuesday Pickup about two years ago and fell in love with taking this brand from simply an idea, to what it’s become today. Since I was a kid, I feel like I’ve had a bit of an entrepreneurial spirit. In the second grade, I’d sit and draw comics that I would then go and try to sell to my neighbors. Why I did this or where I got the idea, no clue, but they would buy them. Likely because they felt sorry for me, but hey we’ll just pretend that they were awesome works of art. Since then I’ve started several failed brands along the way. So many learnings that came with these failures, were poured into Tuesday Pickup.

Essentially it’s a combination of soccer (or fútbol) and home decor/art. I take old worn cleats, old soccer balls etc and fashion them into upscale items like vases, grandfather clocks, watch straps and more. I focused this brand on the idea of exclusivity and was very thoughtful about how I wanted to create this community that would (hopefully) be waiting to buy the next item. I would build anticipation, primarily on social media, and then release one to two items at a time. I was very fortunate that the pieces would sell out within a few hours. I networked like crazy and utilized everything I knew about advertising, marketing, branding and the sport, to build things up. I did a lot of free work, sent items to athletes and had lots of misses but a win here and there.

I’m grateful to now have items sell out within minutes of being released to my website. Within the last two years I’ve grown a following of over ten thousand, worked with several very well known brands, professional sports teams and several famous athletes (including a few whom I’d always idolized). I’ve done a few misc interviews around it, such as this one, which dive a bit more into the details.
